Synopsis

Publisher's Summary This is the way the world ends: with a nanosecond of computer error in a Defense Department laboratory and a million casual contacts that form the links in a chain letter of death. And here is the bleak new world of the day after: a world stripped of its institutions and emptied of 99 percent of its people. A world in which a handful of panicky survivors choose sides - or are chosen. A world in which good rides on the frail shoulders of the 108-year-old Mother Abagail - and the worst nightmares of evil are embodied in a man with a lethal smile and unspeakable powers: Randall Flagg, the dark man. In 1978, Stephen King published The Stand, the novel that is now considered to be one of his finest works. But as it was first published, The Stand was incomplete, since more than 150,000 words had been cut from the original manuscript. Now Stephen King's apocalyptic vision of a world blasted by plague and embroiled in an elemental struggle between good and evil has been restored to its entirety. The Stand: The Complete and Uncut Edition includes material previously deleted, along with new material that King added as he reworked the manuscript for a new generation. It gives us new characters and endows familiar ones with new depths. It has a new beginning and a new ending. What emerges is a gripping work with the scope and moral complexity of a true epic. For hundreds of thousands of fans who heard The Stand in its original version and wanted more, this new edition is Stephen King's gift. And those who are listening to The Stand for the first time will discover a triumphant and eerily plausible work of the imagination that takes on the issues that will determine our survival. Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?I would highly recommend this book. I have read it twice in its original release, again when it was re-released and then just finished listening to this audio version. I thought Grover Gardner did a wonderful reading of the book.Who was your favorite character and why?Franny Goldsmith was and remains my favorite character in the book. She just seems to remain optimistic throughout, which is tough to do under the darkness of the situation. What does Grover Gardner bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?I can't think of much to add here. I can just say that he did a terriffic reading of the book. I'd be happy to get other audibooks where he was the narrator. If you could rename The Stand, what would you call it? Humanity redeemed

A "Stand" Out...
A "Stand" Out...Sep 19, 2022

I was introduced to this book many, many years ago and immediately became a fan. Some 25 plus years later, this book is one that I make it a point of reading every year...just like watching "It's A Wonderful Life" at Christmas time. I was so excited to see that it had been released on Audible...I bought it, right then and there. In my opinion, this book is one of Stephen King's best and it is indeed a classic. A must have for your listening pleasure and now perhaps I will not have to replace another copy quite so soon! 

Exactly what I remember from the mini-series
Exactly what I remember from the mini-seriesSep 19, 2022

I listened to this book hoping that it would deviate significantly from the mini series I remembered from years and years ago, but that was not the case. The Stand (mini-series) was my first introduction to the post-apocalypses genre, and it helped to make that genre one of my absolute favorites in all of literature. That being said, this book is deeply flawed, and like so many Stephen King novels suffers from two major problems:1)A terrible ending; and2)Unnecessary use of supernatural phenomenon The Stand could have been one of the absolute greatest sci-fi novels of all time... had it stuck to being sci-fi. Instead it quickly veers into the supernatural, and leaves science in the dust. The bad guys are a little bit too evil, and the ending is just flat-out stupid. It is a fun journey, though, and if you haven't been tainted by the mini-series, I highly recommend reading the book because it is a very captivating and engrossing (if imperfect) ride.

What did you like best about The Stand? What did you like least?great premise, agonizingly slow. The earlier version of this book was much, much better than this new one, with all of the extras. It slows a terrific story down to a crawl.... Also, if you know anything about firearms, this book will make you roll your eyes.To wit:in 1990, the US Army was not using the .45 automatic or the Thompson sub-machine gun.The M-16 is a rifle, not a carbine. There was never a rifle call the M-3 in 1990.Etc...etc... The Devil is in the details.
