Synopsis

Publisher's Summary It: Chapter Two - soon to be a major motion picture in 2019! Stephen King’s terrifying, classic number one New York Times best seller, “a landmark in American literature” (Chicago Sun-Times) - about seven adults who return to their hometown to confront a nightmare they had first stumbled on as teenagers…an evil without a name: It. Welcome to Derry, Maine. It’s a small city, a place as hauntingly familiar as your own hometown. Only in Derry the haunting is real. They were seven teenagers when they first stumbled upon the horror. Now they are grown-up men and women who have gone out into the big world to gain success and happiness. But the promise they made 28 years ago calls them reunite in the same place where, as teenagers, they battled an evil creature that preyed on the city’s children. Now, children are being murdered again, and their repressed memories of that terrifying summer return as they prepare to once again battle the monster lurking in Derry’s sewers. Readers of Stephen King know that Derry, Maine, is a place with a deep, dark hold on the author. It reappears in many of his books, including Bag of Bones, Hearts in Atlantis, and 11/22/63. But it all starts with It. “Stephen King’s most mature work.” (St. Petersburg Times) “It will overwhelm you…to be read in a well-lit room only.” (Los Angeles Times). ©1980 Stephen King (P)2010 Penguin Audio

Read the story 30 years ago. Great to hear it with Steven Weber. Awesome performance.

King is an excellent writer but oh so sick

King writes a descriptive, well-planned story, but it is beyond deranged. I wouldn’t call this solely a horror due to the pedophilic and sickening nature of many of the stories within this novel. It will make your skin crawl solely based on its graphic nature. I wouldn’t recommend listening to this to anyone.

Outstanding Performance of a Truly Amazing Story!

Steven Weber gives an amazing performance! He gives every character their own spirit and unique voice. His portrayal of Pennywise is absolutely terrifying, and gave me chills! Steven really brings this book to life! The editing is a little choppy and is abrupt at times, but if you can bear with that, it is well worth it to make it to the end! Hopefully they will be able to fix that problem for future listeners and then it would be perfect. I still gave 5 stars because the performer as well as the author shouldn't be criticized for the careless editing. Enjoy!

Good story, strange ending

I'll never get why King needs to inject weird unnecessary sexual content into every story. This book is very well performed, and the story is actually a great Lovecraftian yarn, right up until a jarringly unnecessary bit of sexual content that is essentially King's signature move. I don't know why I keep thinking that "maybe this book won't be like the others". It's clear he's got a fixation.

Weird. Really weird. With horror bits sometimes.
Weird. Really weird. With horror bits sometimes.Sep 19, 2022

In a word, this book is weird. Without spoilers, moments of tension or levity were often interrupted by some bizarre sexual act and the mood would get killed. I'm all for smut, and am often delighted by it. In this book though... it was weird. Gross. But perhaps in some way that adds to the horror element. Maybe this was the height of horror 30 years ago, but now... eh.It took a while, but over time Steven Webers performance grew on me. At first it was kind of a droll, but as the story picked up he got more into the characters, and thus more enjoyable. It took me a solid year to get through this book. It wasn't something I could start and be sucked into. The first half of the book was incredibly slow, but the last half was well paced. It is an interesting read, but It is definitely not for everybody.

Narrator is good, editing is bad

it is far from unreadable, but it is very frustrating to hear the end of a lot of chapters get cut off. still very entertaining and has great narration.

One of King's masterpieces, but it's the voices of Steven Weber that really brought this story to life. Wow. Just wow.

Big disappointment!

I’ve seen several of his movies, but after all these years my first King read is a big Disappointment. The scare factor was really good and Steven Weber is a master but the story goes into some very icky places.Gratuitous sex and profanity at every turn. Not very realistic.I’m not naive nor am I preaching. The gang-bang scene in the sewers is very disturbing.A preteen orgy so they can make it out of the tunnels ?!?!? I’m 53 years old and had too fast forward through some of that. So icky!He tries way too hard to be poetic and flowery. Steven King is one sick puppy, a pervert, a pedifile maybe. Was considering listening to Christine, but not so much now. So disturbed.

I just couldn't finish it.I'm stopping halfway through, but only made it this far because I used up good credits on the book and hate to waste. The story crawls at a snail's pace. The 'horror' is so overdone as to be silly.Lacks subtlety and artistry.I thought I liked Stephen King, but this book may have turned me off of his work for . . . ever.
