Synopsis
Publisher's Summary By number-one New York Times best-selling author Holly Black, the first book in a stunning new series about a mortal girl who finds herself caught in a web of royal faerie intrigue. Of course I want to be like them. They're beautiful as blades forged in some divine fire. They will live forever. And Cardan is even more beautiful than the rest. I hate him more than all the others. I hate him so much that sometimes when I look at him, I can hardly breathe. Jude was seven years old when her parents were murdered and she and her two sisters were stolen away to live in the treacherous High Court of Faerie. Ten years later, Jude wants nothing more than to belong there, despite her mortality. But many of the fey despise humans. Especially Prince Cardan, the youngest and wickedest son of the High King. To win a place at the Court, she must defy him - and face the consequences. In doing so, she becomes embroiled in palace intrigues and deceptions, discovering her own capacity for bloodshed. But as civil war threatens to drown the Courts of Faerie in violence, Jude will need to risk her life in a dangerous alliance to save her sisters, and Faerie itself. ©2018 Holly Black (P)2018 Hachette Audio

the cruel prince

Time and again, I thought I had the main character’s plan all worked out. Thankfully, I was wrong every time. This one surprised me at every turn.

What would have made The Cruel Prince better?Kids storyWhat do you think your next listen will be?fiction fantassyWhat does Caitlin Kelly bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?like her voiceYou didn’t love this book...but did it have any redeeming qualities? I hate this book, wish I could get my money back!

I did not even finish listening to this because it was so slow and boring

The performance of the Reader was excellent and above all else did a good job with what she had to work with. But I didn't use a free credit just to hear the Reader. The story was not to my liking and though I could say more I don't wish to waste any more of my time on this.

I respectfully will say, I did not enjoyed this book, it confused me a lot, with twists for what I expected to be a simple listen, just for entertainment purposes but surely there will be people that will like it much more.

The narrator did an amazing job though the plot wasn't strong. I ended up not liking the main character. she was given an option that would have greatly benefited her based on her having no actual power (physically & politically), no influence, and no true allies. I hate to say it but her importance in the book was just involving herself. The cruel prince was kind of useless to. He couldn't fight well, no interest in the throne, wanted to be a hermit in the mountains....not a strong character.

Before starting this I saw a lot of people were loving this series. I went in expecting to fall hard and fan-girl a lot. I was expecting hours of time lost to looking up fanart and all available book merch on Etsy. That's not what happened. The book starts off with a bang then fizzles quickly. I was over 1/2 way into the book and I wasn't hating it but I definitely didn't love it. I was indifferent. This book is broken up into two sections. The first section is really boring and filled with characters you won't really like or grow to like that much. The second part of the book is where it FINALLY gets interesting...just in time for the book to end and trap you into having to read book two. However, I believe book two will be better....hopefully! I'm gonna check it out either way. I will give it one more shot because this ones was just so meh.

Let me be perfectly clear--I don't necessarily mean "slow-moving train wreck" as an insult. I'm really not sure how I mean it in a positive/negative meaning. What I mean when using that phrase in this moment is that listening to this book unfold was like watching something terrible happen, knowing it was going to happen, and not being able to do anything to stop it. The abusive relationship budding between Jude and Cardan is messed the f up--I knew it was coming, but it was still pretty not okay. That said, I'm curious to see what Holly Black is going to do with them in the next one, so I'll probably at least read "The Wicked King." #Abuse #SiblingStories #Violent #Dark #Tagsgiving #Sweepstakes

I usually love YA fiction, and I've been a big fan of the Twilight series, Hunger Games, the Lunar Chronicles, Throne of Glass, and more. But this book was so tedious I couldn't even finish it. Forcing myself to listen to it was like work. I only made it halfway. The protagonist and narrator, Jude, has no distinguishing character traits to make her an interesting person. She's just pablum, and the evildoers are equally boring. No discernible plot had emerged as of halfway through, when I gave up on forcing myself to listen. I'm so incredibly disappointed in this book. It's a YA book that is strictly for young adults. Baffled by the good reviews - must be teenagers who love it.
