Synopsis

A wryly funny and surprisingly moving account of an extraordinary life lived almost entirely in the public eye. A teen idol at 15, an international icon and founder of the Brat Pack at 20, and one of Hollywood's top stars to this day, Rob Lowe chronicles his experiences as a painfully misunderstood child actor in Ohio who was uprooted to the wild counterculture of mid-'70s Malibu, where he embarked on his unrelenting pursuit of a career in Hollywood.  The Outsiders placed Lowe at the birth of the modern youth movement in the entertainment industry. During his time on The West Wing, he witnessed the surreal nexus of show business and politics, both on the set and in the actual White House. And in between are deft and humorous stories of the wild excesses that marked the '80s, leading to his quest for family and sobriety.  Never mean-spirited or salacious, Lowe delivers unexpected glimpses into his successes, disappointments, relationships, and one-of-a-kind encounters with people who shaped our world over the last 25 years. These stories are as entertaining as they are unforgettable. ©2011 Robert Lowe (P)2011 Macmillan Audio

The book opened with a very interesting anecdote on JFK Jr's decision point to marry Jacquelyn and their subsequent tragic death. I followed the subsequent chapters with interest because the stories are connected with public personas during my teen years. I also remember St Elmo's fire very vividly. However, the book "reads" more like a collection of articles on the lifestyle of the rich and famous or a written reality show in sections. Although I appreciate Rob's honesy about his problems with alcohol and challenges with the hollywood system, I find that the book lacks the depth and level of development that one might find in a memoir such as Angela's Ashes, or even that of Hillary Clinton's, Cathie Blak or Bob Schaeffer. Towards the middle, I also got somewhat jaded with the parade of famous sexy women he's had sex with - it almost felt like a subtle boasting of his conquests. Good enough book for a first publication though.

What surprise.I took a chance because Audible listed this as the sleeper hit of the year. Who knew that Rob Lowe was such a fantastic writer and storyteller? His narration is top notch and the tales he has to tell are very intriguing. You have to admire the fact that he was able to pull himself out of the drug and alcohol scene at 26...and he never went back.Bravo.

Any additional comments?i simply loved this book, and i have never been a rob lowe fan, but because i enjoy a good tell-all autobiography, i took a chance on this one. so many of the stories were captivating, and made you feel as if you were in rob's inner circle of friends, exactly as he titled it,

This audiobook has been so well-received that I expected it to be good.It was even better than "good": it was touching, funny and so enjoyable.Mr. Lowe's stories about becoming a Hollywood star and growing into a mature, nuanced artist are beautifullly told.I was deeply moved by the way he shared his experience of growing up in a home where the adults were distracted by their own problems, his commitment to life-long recovery and his deep love for his wife, Sheryl, and their two sons, Matthew and John Owen. This is the best kind of audiobook: it is beautifully written and artfully performed.

Would you consider the audio edition of Stories I Only Tell My Friends to be better than the print version? There is nothing like listening to someone tell there story in their own voice, especially when the someone is a well-trained actor at the top of his craft. What did you like best about this story? The frank acknowledgment of the author's struggles with alchoholism and his fight to keep his Hollywood performances authentic.Which scene was your favorite?Filming of the insiders.Any additional comments? An excellent book improved by a terrific narrator.

Would you consider the audio edition of Stories I Only Tell My Friends to be better than the print version?I think that listening to Rob read his own book makes his stories more intimate and compelling.I'm not sure that I would have liked the print book nearly as much--it might have seemed a little heavy-handed.However, Rob Lowe reading added warmth and humanity to his words.

What made the experience of listening to Stories I Only Tell My Friends the most enjoyable? It was told by Rob himself. He has a wonderful voice. What was one of the most memorable moments of Stories I Only Tell My Friends?Everything he told about the making of The Outsiders was a glimpse into both moviemaking and many beloved actors in the beginning of their careers. What does Rob Lowe bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?Hearing him tell it was as if he was in the car with me (which was really nice)Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting? If I had the time, yes.Any additional comments?A friend recommended both this book and Bossypants.I've never been a fan of autobiographies, but I loved them both.Rob's book was a lot about culture, politics, movie stars and learning from a very practical and grounded person (who made some mistakes along the way)

Like so many others, I thoroughly enjoyed this audiobook. It's a great memoir that keeps your attention throughout multiple points in his career with some stories that are almost hard to believe. For those that don't know his work, you'll get a pretty good look at his start and the roller coaster ride that followed. It also comes with a great performance and it's pretty clear that Rob Lowe is a natural storyteller and could be a narrator for multiple other works. He has a solid and clear voice that makes the audiobook very easy to listen to and he also nails a few impersonations which adds to the entertainment. To me, everything about the performance felt very natural.A very easy listen and definitely worth the time.Overall, this is a great audiobook.

This was narrated by Lowe himself. Like story time for adults. Extremely entertaining. Listened during my workouts, which made them fly by quickly. I did a search on the Internet to see if Lowe hired a ghostwriter. The writing was too good to be believed. Turns out he wrote it himself. If the acting gig fell through, he would certainly have made a great writer. The stories themselves seem too amazing to be true, and yet they are. As far as autobiographies go, this was an addictive page turner that never failed to deliver.
