Synopsis

Publisher's Summary In Beatrice Prior's dystopian Chicago, society is divided into five factions, each dedicated to the cultivation of a particular virtue - Candor (the honest), Abnegation (the selfless), Dauntless (the brave), Amity (the peaceful), and Erudite (the intelligent). On an appointed day of every year, all sixteen-year-olds must select the faction to which they will devote the rest of their lives. For Beatrice, the decision is between staying with her family and being who she really is - she can't have both. So she makes a choice that surprises everyone, including herself. During the highly competitive initiation that follows, Beatrice renames herself Tris and struggles to determine who her friends really are - and where, exactly, a romance with a sometimes fascinating, sometimes infuriating boy fits into the life she's chosen. But Tris also has a secret, one she's kept hidden from everyone because she's been warned it can mean death. And as she discovers a growing conflict that threatens to unravel her seemingly perfect society, she also learns that her secret might help her save those she loves.... or it might destroy her. Debut author Veronica Roth bursts onto the literary scene with the first book in the Divergent series - dystopian thrillers filled with electrifying decisions, heartbreaking betrayals, stunning consequences, and unexpected romance. ©2011 Veronica Roth (P)2011 HarperCollins Publishers

Divergent is int the same class as Collins Hunger Games...it is almost as action packed and has a very similar feel.It captured me quickly--I was wary when I spent my last credit--wondering if this author was trying to ride the wave of success that Suzanne Collins enjoyed...but not so...this book is remarkable even without the obvious comparison.I highly recommend this book to anyone who enjoys this genre.

Not hunger games but not bad.... Wish it had a more realistic time frame, for this little mouse of a girl to become a real badass and heal from the beatings she took would have taken years

If you are a 16 year old girl you will love this book. I'm not, so I thought all of the character's ideas of what love should be like were silly.

It met my expectations. The sentence structure and writing style are obviously for young people. I did like the book far better than the movie.

What would have made Divergent better?Nothing, I expected more because the Hunger Games is just one of my favorite books and so many people said that it was just like the Hunger Games that I bought the book.Maybe I will buy the sequel, but now I lowered my expectations.Would you ever listen to anything by Veronica Roth again?MaybeWhat do you think the narrator could have done better? The narrator did fine. She seemed a little bored by the novel though, I do not blame her.You didn’t love this book...but did it have any redeeming qualities? It is just a bad mixture of the Hunger Games and Ender's gameAny additional comments? No

Mediocre light reading

I had high hopes for Divergent since so many people seem to have enjoyed it.In the end, however, I found that while it was fast-paced and entertaining, it was also predictable and the romance was saccharine. There are a lot of good action scenes in here, and the plot moves along quickly and keeps the reader's attention. The world itself, however, lacks depth and comes across as contrived.Plot points are too heavily foreshadowed to come as any surprise and left me feeling impatient with the characters as they blundered through to realizations that were clear to the reader chapters ahead of time. The book was heavier on romance than I expected and the romance itself was cliched (and in some instances painfully hard to listen to).Divergent was OK light entertainment.Just don't go into it expecting greatness.

The new dystopian hit!

I'm kicking myself for waiting so long to get this book. Emma Galvin does a wonderful job portraying Beatrice as she starts her journey as an initiate in her new faction, Dauntless. She has to struggle for her life and fight for the lives of her family and friends all while she tries to uncover the deadly truth of what it means to be labeled Divergent. If you are a fan of The Hunger Games, then definitely take the time to listen to this, you'll be intrigued by the relationship between Tris and Four.

This is a well-written (young-adult) dystopian action-adventure that I feel is compelling for readers of all ages. Any "romantic" scenes between the main characters are sweet and age-appropriate (as far as the "target" audience). The narrator does a great job at the same time as she conveys the heart-racing scenes without a lot of extreme emotion..she is rather stoic but as you go through the story you realize that that is the girl's nature. The main characters are compelling and will win you over during the course of the story.I also like a story that leaves enough loose ends that it could certainly be continued as a saga or series but does not leave you with an extreme cliff-hanger,(while you wait How long? for the next installment) and that is the case with this adventure.

This story is one of my favorites. I could not stop listening.Veronica Roth has created a captivating adventure laced with convincingly realistic characters. Beatrice, the character who's viewpoint this story is written from, is what I would consider the perfect portrayal of all the conflicting angles clashing and welding inside a young woman. The mental and physical frustrations Beatrice faces are nothing short of real. The only downfall I could find to this story is that many of the gun references were actually inaccurate. As a firearms instructor and competitor who puts about 4,000 rounds down range per year, it was a mild irritation. However, I did not let it get in the way of my enjoyment of "Divergent". Emma Galvin narrates this book beautifully.

If you're looking for a story with an admirable, complicated, and fascinating young heroine, this book has it.It reminded me of the first time I listened to book one of Hunger Games, though this is certainly unique on its own. Also, the narrator is one of the best I've encountered in the YA section of audible.Wonderful pacing.Easy to listen to.As far as audiobooks go, Emma Galvin and Veronica Roth have made a masterpiece.
