wow

Anybody who has watched the first episode of Eureka will feel a little deja vu. It's not necessarily a bad thing. This show is easily a mix of Deadwood, Battlestar Galactica, and Firefly. It is a western that happens to also be a sci-fi. The best thing this show has going for it is Rockne S. O'Bannon. He is the brilliant mind behind Farscape (possibly the best sci-fi ever). If you felt the story was a little slow, well so were the first few episodes of Farscape but then it really got going. Is the CGI a little lacking at times with some aliens and creatures? Sure, but so was the tiger in Life of Pi and the Cylons in Battlestar Galactica. The producers were smart in where they used the money. The CGI at other times is great, including the close-ups of the aliens in the big battle. The story is nothing new, but it's incredibly fun. The characters are likable and you find yourself pulling for them. I guarantee the more you watch the less you'll focus on the makeup or CGI and the more you'll get sucked into the world O'Bannon has created. Some of the best shows on sci-fi (Eureka, Stargate SG-1 and it's offspring, Farscape, Warehouse 13) have all had some campy dialogue but it's always overshadowed by the talented actors, especially when a scene with heavy drama presents itself. This show has legs and could last for years. Watch not to critique but to enjoy. And enjoy you will.

I have no idea why people are creating bad reviews for Defiance. I watched the pilot episode, and it gave everything a Sc-fi show needs. Guns, Action, Different species (Aliens etc..), Futuristic Mechanics, and a Post apocalyptic feeling. After finishing with the Pilot episode, I was satisfied with the outcome of it, and I don't think it deserves the bad reviews. This is easily one of the best pilots I've ever seen. It's like it felt comfortable even though it was introducing itself. The storyline and characters are solid too. I certainly suggest that anyone still deciding on whether they should watch this or not, should certainly give it a try. Now we just have to hope the next few episodes keep on the current standard.

I have no idea why Syfy can't do something interesting without having to rely on hackneyed plot lines, cheesy graphics, clichéd characters, flat acting and stale writing. This seems to be another in a long line of Sci Fi/Syfy 'crank it out cheap and make it stupid in the hope of attracting dumb people' mold that seems to be the fashion in 21st Century TV. Think Continuum, Santuary, Stargate Atlantis, Revolution, ad nauseum. This is dreadful dreck. I can't continue watching it. I can barely tell this one from all the other ones - Look alike actors spewing the same awful clichés in eerily similar CGI'd universes. When I watched the pilot and saw both Terry David Mulligan and Grahame Green as essentially background actors, I realized this was another cheap 'made-in Canada to get the Canadian tax break money' production and doesn't warrant my time and brain cells.

The scenario is a mix of genres - western, Mad Max apocalyptic, wandering Ronin and classic science fiction. The plot lines were a tad cliché as were some of the characters, and the action story lines a bit rushed, but it still managed to keep it together. The strength of Defiance is probably it's leads, Grant Bowler is excellent and Stephanie Leonidas also great. They make make interesting lead pair...as father/daughter. Secondly the world..it's a different premise to most Sci fi/fantasy, and an interesting world with a lot of potential for interesting story lines. It's hard to say where it will go, but I will keep watching.

O'Bannon et al. created a rich, lush world for the backstory of the series, then populated it with 2-dimensional clichéd characters. The rugged loner with the spunky sidekick, the noble mayor who's constantly underestimated, the creepy rich industrialist, the acerbic doctor, etc., The plot also raced away from the promise of innovative plot line to embrace the true and tired: defending the city, loner "falling" for the city and deciding to stay, and of course, a truly eeeeevil villains that bonds the characters together. Puh-leeze. I hope they can snatch victory from the jaws of boredom and do some good stuff with this. It would be a pity if they went through all the effort of creating the imaginative environment of the series, only to have it stumble due to dreadful unimaginative writing.
