Synopsis

In 50 episodes, we’re going to explore biology—the science of life. Dr. Samuel Ramsey will guide you through life’s vast interconnectedness, telling lesser-known stories of biologists along the way. We’ll discover how evolution, genetics, ecology, and cell and organismal biology deepen our knowledge of every living thing: including ourselves. This course is based on an introductory-level college and AP Biology curriculum. By the end of this course, you will be able to: *Understand what life is and the natural systems that make it possible. *Describe the types of questions biologists answer and the skills they need to answer them. *Explain how life is organized in nested systems that regulate biological activities. *Describe how life on earth has evolved, including the forces driving that change. *Identify ways in which all of life is interconnected and how biology impacts human society. *Use scientific language inclusively and accurately. *Understand the collective nature of biology through examples of innovation and discovery from a wide variety of researchers, civilizations, and cultures, including historically underrepresented scientists and stories Biology textbooks cited include: Taylor, Simon, Dickey, Hogan and Reece (2017); Morris et al. (2019); Clark, Choi, and Douglas; Murray, Cain, Wassherman, Minorsky, & Reece (2016); and Miller and Levine (2019). Why do animals do what they do? It’s a huge question, and in this episode, we’ll learn how scientists break it down. We’ll talk about the proximate and ultimate studies they use to understand animal behavior, and some of what they’ve learned along the way — including how much decision-making other animals are really doing. Introduction: Animal Behavior 00:00 Proximate Level 02:01 Ultimate Level 03:06 Innate Behaviors 04:30 Complex Behaviors 06:34 Review & Credits 09:35 This series was produced in collaboration with HHMI BioInteractive, committed to empowering educators and inspiring students with engaging, accessible, and quality classroom resources. We tend to think life fits in two tidy categories: male or female, XX or XY. But it’s so much more diverse and complicated! In this episode of Crash Course Biology, we’ll discover sex and sexuality as a continuum across life. We’ll learn why humans are the only species with gender, and why same-sex mating is more common than you might think. Introduction: Sex & Gender in Humans 00:00 How Sex and Gender are different 01:15 Sex development 04:42 Differences in sex development 06:02 What is sexuality 07:46 Non-human diversity in sexuality 08:50 Review & Credits 12:12 This series was produced in collaboration with HHMI BioInteractive, committed to empowering educators and inspiring students with engaging, accessible, and quality classroom resources.
