If you know who Big Jay is and the type of comedy he does than this special is a must. It bums me out to see people putting bad reviews on this just because they have a thin skin.
Big Jay Oakerson is and will always be a controversial comic, but remember it is a comedy show and he is making jokes and not trying to offend anyone. People need to take themselves less serious and stop being offended by everything just for the sake of it. Great story telling style and grreat comedy special from a true NY comic.
several of his jokes are about Jesus as well as Hitler (and, thank God they are NOT in the same jokes). I wasn't offended by these remarks but can guarantee some viewers will be put off. Hitler is NOT a good topic for comedy (unless it's in THE PRODUCERS) and Jesus is bound to offend many devoutly religious folks...though I think these jokes weren't especially tacky or mean. Just letting you know so you can think about this before watching. I had a great time listening to his routine....and you most likely will as well.
I don't know Big Jay Oakerson, never heard of him before so this is a first for me. I see the reviews are divided between love and hate. The truth is somewhere in the middle. His humor is mostly vulgar, but that's fine as long as it's funny (what it was to me). The reviews with the lowest score possible are from prudes, people that are stuck somewhere in the Middle Ages, bible thumpers that are easily offended. I'm just wondering why they watch such a show in the first place? To me Big Jay Oakerson's show has positive and negative things. The possitive would be the good jokes (dirty yes, but does that matter when it's funny?), good interaction with the audience (some improv with the audience but I'm pretty sure it's rehearsed improv as you will always find a couple that is already married, is going to marry etc... so not really complete improvisation), overall a good stage presence. The negative would be his little laugh, giggling or puffing or whatever it is he does between jokes (it's his way of laughing so he can't really help it but I find it slightly annoying). I did enjoy his show and will look for more.
I get the material is harsh, but at this point harsh is refreshing and different. He's funny, that's the main thing. I hope he makes more specials and doesn't lose that edge.
I'm hoping this isn't the future of comedy. I get that being a little crude can be funny but this special seemed to be mostly about his describing his sex-life in the grossest ways he can imagine. Seriously, not funny at all. I will continue to check out her stuff, but if he doesn't go back to being funnier than he is gross very soon I will no longer bother with his stuff.
