Dr. Streunse let passion without guided reason destroy him. It's ironic that at the end, the very people that he thought he was working for saying, "I'm one of you!" turned out to be part of those calling for his execution. Being a proponent for the Enlightenment didn't make him a better person or ruler - as he eventually employed censorship just as those before him. And Guldberg was no better either - spreading pornographic caricature even though he seemed to be against such things at first. Human beings, as they currently are, are flawed. The answer is not in institutionalised religion or "Enlightenment" but rather in the knowledge of the Lord Jesus Christ, the Saviour of the world.

The topic is good, but the movie is very slow and sometimes a little dull, it would have helped if they had a few more minutes of Fredrick at the end instead of some text on screen saying what would happen subsequently to the court and Johan's reforms. The performance is good, specially audience receive a very human narrative on king, Christian, but it would have had helped if some insight into his childhood had been added at the beginning. Hard to explain why this movie is so enjoyable. It looks great but then plenty of movies look great. It's well acted but then... You get my drift. I felt this movie captured an understated elegance that permeated every scene, every camera move, every set. One is drawn into a strange atmosphere of greyness and fog, enhanced by beautiful cinematography. Mads Mikkelsen is as usual superb and his character (POTENTIAL SPOILER) develops into quite a dark one. We're quite far, here, from Hollywood standards, which adds appeal to the movie. Despite the lack of strong action or anything really "exciting", it's as entertaining as any blockbuster I've seen. Heartily recommended.

Excellent costume design. Great role of Mads Mikkelsen. The actor we want to see in Hollywood productions

They do it hundred times better than Hollywood. Oscar nominated. I Recommend.

An excellent period drama with a gripping story-telling style. I didn't really know of the story beforehand (checked on Wiki later to confirm details); so despite the screenplay being a little slow, I found it quite gripping and enjoyed it. The details in the movie seem to conform well with historical facts. It gives a peek into the past, the history of aristocracy; how the power was captured, abused at the cost of common people and how far mankind has come in just a couple of centuries! A kind of movie that you end up thinking about afterwards. Powerful performance by Alicia Vikander; Mads Mikkelsen, Mikkel Boe FølsgaardIts were good as well.

I don't know what to say - I watched because I loved Mads Mikkelsen but the entire film was an emotional roller coaster I didn't know the history so was completely unprepared for the ending! I will now be googling danish history!! Amazing film and really worth a watch
